Before you begin, it is important that you are informed about the purpose and procedure of this research. Please read the following information carefully.

Purpose Of This Research

In this study, we are trying to assess the human user's capability to distinguish between real images and manipulated images.

Taking Part In This Study Is Voluntary

You may choose not to take part in the study or may choose to leave the study at any time. Deciding not to participate, or deciding to leave the study later, will not result in any penalty or loss of benefits to which you are entitled. Your decision to not take part or to withdraw will have no impact on your relationship with the University of Notre Dame. The study is being conducted by Tim Weninger at the University of Notre Dame (email: tweninger@nd.edu phone: 574-631-6770). This study is being funded by the USAID.

What To Expect From This Study?

If you agree to participate in the study, you will be asked to classify images as either Real (authentic) or Altered (manipulated) based on your judgment. Once You have classified one image, you can click the "Next" button and move on to the next one. You will be presented with 32 images in total. You will also be asked to complete a short survey at the end of the task.

Anonymity

No personally identifying information will be collected. Any research data published in scientific journals will be anonymous and cannot be traced back to you.

How Long Will This Study Take?

This study should take about 7 minutes to complete.

What Are The Risks Of Taking Part In The Study?

We have collected the images from social media. Some images might have some offensive or inappropriate content. But it is unlikely. There might be a small fatigue from completing the task.

How Will My Information Be Protected?

Efforts will be made to keep your personal information confidential. We cannot guarantee absolute confidentiality. All your responses will likely be stored by Prolific (a platform used for crowdsourcing tasks and data collection for academic research). Likewise, responses will be stored at Notre Dame. Your personal information may be disclosed if required by law. We will not collect any Personal Identifying Information (PII). Organizations that may inspect and/or copy your research records for quality assurance and data analysis include groups such as the study investigator and his/her research associates, the University of Notre Dame Institutional Review Board or its designees, and (as allowed by law) state or federal agencies, especially the Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP), who may need to access the research records.

Will I Be Paid?

You will be paid approximately 1.75 USD for the completion of the task. In the event of an incomplete task, you will not receive any compensation. This study contains a number of checks to make sure that participants are finishing the tasks honestly and completely. As long as you read the instructions and complete the tasks, your task will be approved. If you fail these checks, your task will be rejected and you will not receive any compensation.

Participant's Consent

By selecting “I Agree to Participate in This Study”, you (the participant) confirm that you are at least 18 years old and you consent to participate in the study under the terms and conditions described above.
